Themes

Unfortunately, we can’t physically gather together to discuss the books, and thus we can’t have theme nights with food and clothing to match. However, I’ve come up with a few ways to impliment this fun part of being in a book club online.

With all of these events, you will read the book you’ve chosen in the first three weeks, as usual, but then during the fourth week instead of discussing each book individually, you will just post your review on that particular book. I will also post a discussion post (as I always will) which will ask general questions such as, “How does your book fit into this theme? What made you choose this particular book?” and so on.

Themes we’ve had in the past include Time and New Authors.

Here are some general theme ideas. Please feel free to suggest a theme at B.PBC.NET using the regular book suggestion form. :)

Miscellaneous Themes: There may be a month when I will pick a theme instead of a book. The theme can be anything ranging from Westerns to Ireland, Travelling to Bibliophilia. I will list a few books that fit under that theme which you can choose from, or you can choose your own book that fits within that theme.

Authors: Like with themes, I might pick a certain author. You would have to choose a book from that author (any book!) to read for that month. Again, I will list a few books, but as long as your chosen book was authored or co-authored (or even illustrated!) by this particular person, it will qualify.

The Movies: If there is a movie based on a particular book we have already chosen to read in the future (that is, we won’t pick the book based on the movie), part of the month’s discussion will be to compare the book to the movie. You will be asked to read the book, in full, and then watch the movie. Your review can be comparisons between the two, or just about the book – it’s up to you.

Nostalgia: A nostalgia month will consist of each member reading a book from his/her past which was at one point a favorite. The requirements would be that this book must have been your favorite more than ten years ago, and it must be a chapter book (not a story book or a board book). No reading a book that you loved three years ago – that’d be no fun! Of course, if you’re a younger person and ten years ago you were just getting out of diapers, we’ll make an exception for you. :p
