1. What are the symbolic meanings of the main characters?
2. To what extent is the story a social commentary?
3. What are the main similarities and differences of the three spirits who visit Scrooge? Do their differences have any thematic significance? (Why, for instance, do they look and dress so differently?)
4. In your opinion, what were the things, specifically, that changed Scrooge’s ways? How do you explain his change of heart by the end of the story?
5. Why do you think A Christmas Carol is such a popular story? What is the appeal that has brought it into the media (several movie adaptations), the theatre (just as many performances as The Nutcracker around Christmastime), and several other books (for example, A Midnight Carol by Patricia K. Davis centers around Charles Dickens’ writing of this book)?
